Do members know (or remember) what a spreadsheet is? Do they know what tables and charts are? Ask, and engage the conversation. Rather than teaching directly, try to help members generate their own definition. Essential terms include:

Table

Headings

Rows

Columns

To the extent possible, be sure your members have an understanding of these basic spreadsheet terms.

Open up the spreadsheet and show members how to make a basic graph from their data. The process will vary, depending on computer and software, but in general, this should be easy.
Highlight the rows and columns, and then create a simple table.

Hopefully, this happens automatically. Don't worry if it takes trial and error, because (a) it isn't always easy and (b) it's really important for members to learn on their own.

Facilitate the process of making sure all members have created a simple graph from the data. If members are having success at generating a graph, tap them as peer mentors to help other members accomplish the same.

What conclusions can members draw from the simple graph they created?

Have each member write down one conclusion. Then have them, one by one, read their conclusion out loud. Is the conclusion a fair one to make? Why or why not? Remind members to give the file a clear name and date when saving and uploading files to their online portfolio, e.g., graph-excel-5-12-2014.xls. Help members identify useful organization methods, such as assigning tags to files and creating folders.

The product of this activity counts toward their Advanced badge.

/Lists/Coach/Flat.aspx?RootFolder=%2FLists%2FCoach%2FCreate%20a%20basic%20graph&FolderCTID=0x01200200F3733329C0533443AE0C3B756D148148
